I am all for jumping on the band wagon, especially when it comes to the latest health trends. You’ve probably heard the word kombucha floating around recently, and if you haven’t, you’re missing out. The fermented tea drink has been around for more than 2,000 years, originated by the ancient Chinese for it’s health benefits.

Like anything these days there is a debate about the actual benefits of kombucha; whether or not it actually provides any health benefits at all. Supposedly it improves digestion, helps with weight loss, increases energy, is great for dextoxing, can reduce joint pain, prevent cancer, and provide immune support.

The sugar-tea combination is fermented by a symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast, leaving you with a carbonated drink full of healthy enzymes, vitamins, amino acids and probiotics. My boyfriend and I call it poop juice since all these components aid in digestion…plus it’s funny.

Some people aren’t a fan of the taste, but I think it is delicious, especially when it’s made with different flavours. My favourite brand right now is gaining major traction in Calgary right now called True Büch Kombucha brewed in Calgary. They have taps around the city making it easy to refill my bottle. I don’t normally drink anything but water and tea, so it ends up being a special treat to drink. If you wanted to add it to your routine, it’s a fantastic alternative to juice or pop.
