I was in Winnipeg last weekend and just like every other trip I make out to the Peg I like to find the cool coffee shops and boutiques that I haven’t visited yet. My boyfriend actually found North Flag on Instagram and told me that it was right up my ally. It’s a boutique over in River Heights that specializes in casual men’s wear. if you live in Calgary, think Less 17 and Meraki.
Cliff Lazareck is the owner of North Flag and I was pumped to meet him and explore the store and the brand. Winnipeg’s fashion scene in Cliff’s word, is ECLECTIC. The hot summers and cold winters offer the residents of Winnipeg ample opportunity to experiment with fashion. North Flag fits in their with it’s understated and contemporary look while encompassing outdoor elements.
Where did the name come from?
I wanted a name that evoked a sense of where the brand is coming from; being in Canada and Winnipeg more specifically. There is a groundswell of PRIDE and new OPTIMISMabout living and being from this place and I think the name North Flag evokes that feeling.
North Flag carries as many Canadian brands as possible. Cliff feels like he has accomplished that but is hoping to bring in some new and emerging brands. The majority of the brands that are carried in the store are not available elsewhere in Winnipeg like Camp Brand Goods and Peace Collective.
According to Cliff the most rewarding part of starting your own business is building something from the group up and being in full control of what is being presented to the customer. On the other hand, the most challenging part is that owning a business is all encompassing and time consuming. It can be challenging to find the work life balance.
What advice would you give to entrepreneurs?
FOLLOW YOUR PASSION. This has been said a million times but it’s the truth. If you are investing your time and money into something make sure it is something you’ll want to stick with when times get tough. It’ll make the successes that much more rewarding.
How do you stay motivated?
Offering the best customer service and products I can and seeing people react positively to that.
What’s does the future hold for North Flag?
I hope to expand the brand with more products and grow the store both in our physical location on Academy Rd. in Winnipeg and our soon to come online store at northflag.co
