Winnipeg gets a bad rap for being cold and dreadful with nothing cool to do. Once you spend a little more time here, however, you start to uncover hidden gems that make Winnipeg worth coming to (read 6 Insta-worthy restaurants here). Even in the winter, despite what you may think of minus 30 weather, there are lots of things to cross off on your to do list.
If you’re looking to escape the cold weather the place to do it in Winnipeg is Thermëa, by Nordik Spa-Nature is the ultimate relaxation experience. “This relaxation and healing centre is mainly focused on thermotherapy and relaxation techniques from Scandinavian countries. It offers a multisensory experience in a surrounding natural setting and is aimed at contributing to the health and well-being of its guests.”
Sound amazing? It’s a great way to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and relax. We went for an afternoon and ended up staying for 5 hours without even knowing. They have outdoor baths, saunas, an exfoliation room and resting areas. Even with a wind chill of -42 we got into the thermal cycle groove and spent the afternoon and evening relaxing and enjoying each other’s company.
Thermal cycle is a heat therapy treatment that involves alternating between hot and cold, followed by a rest period. This relaxation ritual is based on a 2000-year-old tradition founded in Nordic countries. The benefits of thermotherapy are both physical and mental, and who doesn’t like taking a little me time. The best part is you can’t have your cell phone, so you can really escape from the outside world.
After we finished three thermal cycles and an extra hot tub soak we headed to Restö, their dining experience. You don’t even have to take your robes off to enjoy delicious bites and sip on a glass of wine.
Next time you’re in Winnipeg, summer or winter, I highly recommend spending a day at Thermëa. Enjoy the thermal cycle, treat yourself to a massage or body treatment and taste their delicious menu. Head to their website for more information.
